What I Learnt from “Make Your Bed”

The book Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven is an inspiring read. It is based on the commencement speech that Admiral McRaven gave at the University of Texas on May 17, 2014. In this book, the author shares 10 stories from his 37 years in the U.S. Navy. The lessons he shares are life lessons and will be useful for everyone navigating the challenges of life, whether or not they are in the military.

Even though the book is titled Make Your Bed, the entire book is not about making your bed. Only the first story talks about making your bed first thing in the morning. During the author’s SEAL training in the U.S. Navy, all trainees were required to make their beds in a specific way. Each morning, instructors would check whether the beds were made to the required standard. Even the slightest discrepancy would attract punishment. The author explains that this seemingly small task instills discipline and gives a sense of accomplishment. It is the first completed task of the day and sets you up for the challenges ahead.

The book also includes stories about the importance of teamwork, accepting that life can be irrationally unfair, how failures make us stronger, facing challenges with courage, giving others hope, and never quitting.

Each chapter contains interesting anecdotes, making the book a captivating read. It is a short book that can be finished in one day.
